Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Guided Personal Finance — how the AI works, what courses are available, and how to get the most out of the platform.

What is Guided Personal Finance?

Guided Personal Finance is a guided learning platform organized around personal finance. It covers courses from budgeting and saving through investing, retirement planning, taxes, insurance, and real estate — each with structured modules, lessons, and an interactive finance tutor you can ask anything.

How does the finance chat work?

Each course and lesson page includes a chat interface powered by OpenAI's GPT models. You select a finance persona and a difficulty level, then ask any personal finance question. The guide responds with detailed, personalized explanations in Markdown — including real numbers and examples — and suggests follow-up questions to guide your exploration.

What model powers the chat?

The chat is powered by OpenAI's GPT-4o mini, accessed via the OpenAI API. Responses are generated in real time, with a prompt cache for common suggested questions to reduce latency and API costs. The system prompt is customized per persona, course, and difficulty level.

Who are the finance guides?

There are five finance guides, each with a distinct teaching style: Sarah Morgan (budgeting, debt management, and day-to-day money skills), Prof. David Chen (investing, financial markets, and macroeconomics), Dr. Elena Vasquez (psychology of money and behavioral finance), Marcus Johnson (tax planning and real estate), and Dr. Priya Patel (retirement planning and long-term wealth building). You can meet them all on the Guides page.

What difficulty levels are available?

  • Curious Beginner — No prior knowledge required. Plain language, no code.
  • Practitioner — Assumes some software background. Minimal jargon.
  • Developer — Includes code snippets and implementation patterns.
  • Researcher — Mathematical and theoretical depth. Papers and proofs.
  • Expert — Graduate-level: formal notation, advanced architectures, latest research.

Does Guided Personal Finance have structured lessons?

Yes. Each course is divided into modules, and each module contains individual lessons with a title, summary, key concepts, and suggested prompts. Lessons link to each other so you can follow a structured path, or jump around freely — the chat is available on every page.

Can I track my progress through courses?

Yes. Sign in with Google to enable progress tracking. Guided Personal Finance records which lessons you have completed in each course, shows your completion percentage on your Dashboard, and links you directly back to the last lesson you visited so you can pick up exactly where you left off.

Can I earn a Certificate of Completion?

Yes. When you complete every lesson in a course, Guided Personal Finance automatically generates a Certificate of Completion for that course. The certificate includes your name, the course title, the date awarded, and a unique certificate ID. You can access it from your Dashboard, and print it or save it as a PDF using your browser's print dialog.

Is there a blog and news section?

Yes. The Finance Blog publishes original educational articles written by our finance guides, covering topics across all courses. The Finance News section is updated regularly with curated news from personal finance and investing outlets.

Is Guided Personal Finance free to use?

Yes, Guided Personal Finance is free. All courses, lessons, blog articles, news, and people profiles are freely accessible without an account or subscription. The chat is available on every page at no cost.

How accurate are the guide responses?

Each guide is instructed to stay focused on personal finance education, use correct terminology, and avoid making claims where advice is highly situation-specific. However, language models can make mistakes. For critical financial decisions, always verify information with a qualified financial professional. The guides are a learning aid, not a replacement for professional financial advice.
